Car insurance in Germany: how to compare offers and change insurer

Guide · checked 6 Oct 2026

Switch deadline for most contracts: 30 November

In brief

Every registered vehicle in Germany must have third-party liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht). Partial cover (Teilkasko) and comprehensive cover (Vollkasko) are optional. For most contracts the insurance year is the calendar year, so your cancellation must reach the insurer by 30 November (1)(2)(3).

This page explains terms and steps. We do not advise you which insurance or insurer to choose; the decision is yours.

The calculator is in German because a German partner provides it. The German terms in the table “What to prepare” will help you fill it in.

What to look at in the results

  • Not only the price. Compare the maximum amount the insurer pays (Deckungssumme), your excess (Selbstbeteiligung), whether gross negligence, collisions with animals and marten damage are covered, and extras such as roadside assistance (2).
  • What affects the price. A garage, who else drives, an obligation to use a partner repair shop (Werkstattbindung), no-claims protection (Rabattschutz) and the agreed mileage (1).
  • SF-Klasse. Ask your current insurer to confirm in writing which class it will report to the new one (1). A class granted as part of a special promotion does not have to be accepted by the new insurer (2).
  • Comparisons are not the whole market. Comparison portals often include only selected insurers and tariffs; the consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale) recommends checking several portals and direct offers (1).

Steps

  1. Prepare the information from the table above.
  2. Check when your contract ends. With some insurers the year does not start on 1 January but on the day the vehicle was registered (1).
  3. Fill in the comparison in the calculator below. You enter the data yourself.
  4. Compare cover and conditions, not only the price.
  5. Cancel the old contract only after the new insurer has accepted you, because Kasko cover may be refused (3).
  6. The cancellation must reach the old insurer by 30 November; the notice period is normally one month (1)(2)(3). Do not assume the new insurer will cancel for you; check whether it offers that service (3).
  7. Keep the policy and the confirmation of cancellation.

Your rights in brief

  • Price increase. If your insurer raises the premium, you have a special right to cancel within one month of being notified. This also applies if the invoice with the higher premium arrives after 30 November (1)(3).
  • After a claim. Once a claim has been settled you may cancel, within one month (2)(3).
  • Change of vehicle or owner. A special cancellation is possible in these cases too (2)(3).
  • eVB number. You need the insurance confirmation (eVB-Nummer) only when registering or re-registering a vehicle, not when you merely change insurer (3).

Please note

This page provides general information and points to a comparison. We do not offer advice and do not recommend any specific provider or tariff. You fill in the comparison yourself and conclude the contract directly with the provider. If you sign a contract through the comparison, we may receive a commission. Comparisons do not cover every provider on the market.
